The angler who has claimed the National Walleye Tour Championship two years running will examine how organized digital instruction can transform the way niche expertise is recorded, taught, and utilized across sectors that have historically operated without formal training systems, with particular attention to fishing education and forward‑facing sonar.
Tom Huynh’s journey to becoming a repeat National Walleye Tour Champion started well outside the usual circles of professional walleye fishing.
Growing up on a cattle farm in rural Arkansas, Huynh spent his early years fishing from the edge of a small farm pond alongside his grandfather. He later relocated to the Fargo–Moorhead area to pursue a degree in Computer Information Systems at Minnesota State University Moorhead. A job at a nail salon, initially taken to cover college expenses, unexpectedly turned into a career lasting more than twenty years.
Huynh eventually owned and still manages nail salons in the Fargo region, having spent many years largely disconnected from fishing. When he returned to the sport in earnest, he brought an outsider’s viewpoint, an artist’s eye for detail, and a readiness to challenge assumptions that veteran anglers had long taken for granted.
That nontraditional approach ultimately propelled him to the pinnacle of professional walleye fishing, and now onto the TEDxFargo platform.
Huynh is scheduled to speak at TEDxFargo CHARGE on Wednesday, July 29, at Brewhalla in Fargo, North Dakota. His presentation will explore how structured, curriculum‑driven digital education can reshape unconventional industries by taking specialized know‑how and converting it into knowledge that is teachable, applicable, and scalable.
The concept originated from Huynh’s work co‑founding Tom Huynh University™, where he arranged his championship‑level expertise into a progressive curriculum that teaches anglers how to work with forward‑facing sonar technology, as opposed to offering it as a collection of unrelated tips, device settings, or fishing spots.
“Fishing has never lacked information,” Huynh said. “What it has lacked is a true educational structure that helps anglers understand why something works, how to recognize it and when to apply it. This is about teaching people how to think, not simply giving them another answer to copy.”
This distinction has grown more critical as forward‑facing sonar technology and other advanced marine electronics reshape both recreational and tournament fishing. Anglers now have extraordinary access to live data from below the surface, yet owning the equipment does not automatically supply the skill needed to make sense of it.
Huynh identified that shortfall early on.
Rather than treating forward‑facing sonar merely as a fish‑finding device, he employed it to observe behavior, movement patterns, and responses. His method integrated sonar reading with accurate boat handling, environmental awareness, and disciplined decision‑making.
Despite launching his professional walleye career in his mid‑40s, significantly later than many of his younger rivals, Huynh advanced through the sport at an exceptional pace. After securing the National Walleye Tour Championship in both 2024 and 2025, he will attempt to make history at Lake Sakakawea within weeks by becoming the first angler ever to claim three straight titles.
The same principles behind those wins were later organized into a structured digital curriculum. Rather than focusing on isolated methods, the educational model is built around transferable concepts such as fish behavior, sonar reading, boat control, and in‑the‑moment decision‑making.
The curriculum now reaches students across more than 40 states and internationally, indicating that anglers are seeking more than just additional content. They want a systematic way to grasp and apply increasingly complex information.
“Standing on the TEDxFargo stage is surreal for me,” Huynh said. “My path has not been linear, but every part of it, from growing up in Arkansas to working in nail salons and competing professionally, taught me something about observation, learning and having the courage to reinvent yourself.”
At TEDxFargo, Huynh will explore an idea that reaches beyond fishing: expertise becomes more valuable when it can be captured, organized, and taught in a way that enables others to think independently.
