The Cryonics Institute, the world's largest provider of cryonic suspension, celebrated its 50th anniversary Sunday with a gala celebration at the Ford House.
Half a century after the cryonics movement first captured the public imagination, the organization at its center marked a major milestone this weekend — and the numbers suggest its once-fringe vision is gaining real traction. The Cryonics Institute, the world's largest provider of cryonic suspension, held a gala celebration at Ford House in Michigan on Sunday to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Speakers reflected on the organization's trajectory, highlighting a period of rapid expansion, its adherence to non-profit and democratic governance, breakthroughs in low-temperature biology, and fresh initiatives — among them technical upgrades and a newly established cryonics trust designed to help members safeguard their assets in anticipation of a possible future revival.
The weekend festivities were preceded by facility tours, giving members and visitors an up-close look at both of the institute's locations.

To date, CI has cryonically suspended 295 patients, along with more than 300 pets. The organization was founded by Robert Ettinger, whose 1964 book The Prospect of Immortality is widely credited with launching the cryonics movement itself.

Why it matters: As the institute enters its second half-century, the steady climb in patients and pets placed in suspension — alongside new financial and technical tools — signals that cryonics is moving from a philosophical curiosity toward a more organized, practical endeavor. The growing infrastructure around preserving human life could reshape conversations about mortality, medical ethics, and long-term financial planning for those who believe revival may one day be possible.
