The Black Hole of Hiring: Study Reveals 50% of Job Seekers Receive Automated Rejections Without a Word from Recruiters

Was it made clear to you by the company that artificial intelligence assessed your job application?

Fresh research indicates that 50% of people looking for work encounter silent rejections, while more than 80% face a void in AI disclosure, fueling broad distrust in hiring practices.

“When half of all job seekers are rejected without human contact, and over 80% have no idea if a person or an algorithm read their resume, trust in the hiring system breaks down completely.”— Volen Vulkov, Co-Founder of EnhancvNEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, July 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — A fresh investigation by Enhancv, a worldwide frontrunner in AI-powered career solutions, uncovers a deep trust deficit on the receiving side of contemporary hiring technology. Based on a poll of 1,066 U.S. job seekers, automated recruitment systems are leaving applicants in the dark: 50.5% of candidates received at least one job rejection over the past year with no explanation or feedback whatsoever from a human recruiter.

The results reveal a fundamental rift between corporate automation and candidate confidence. While companies deploy artificial intelligence to manage rising application volumes, job seekers are increasingly left guessing who—or what—is assessing their professional credentials.

How Automated Hiring Systems Shape Candidate Views

Among those who got no human input after a rejection, 63.8% think a machine, not a hiring manager, made the final decision.

A large majority of applicants operate without basic transparency: 68.5% say AI involvement was never disclosed to them at any point during the application process.

One-way AI video screenings and chatbot filters are pushing away skilled talent, with 31.4% of job seekers actively abandoning an application or declining an interview specifically to dodge automated screening tools.

Concerns about algorithmic unfairness are widespread across the workforce: 47.7% of candidates agree that AI hiring tools show bias against their age, race, gender, or background.

Perceptions of bias are even higher among neurodivergent job seekers, with 53.4% reporting that automated systems create unfair obstacles to employment.

The Erosion of Hiring Transparency

The research identifies a critical flaw in current recruitment workflows. Fewer than 10% of surveyed job seekers (9.7%) were clearly told that an AI system was evaluating their application. When combined with those who were uncertain, nearly 85% of applicants are left completely in the dark about how their resumes are scored.

“When half of all job seekers are rejected without human contact, and over 80% have no idea if a person or an algorithm read their resume, trust in the hiring system breaks down completely,” said Volen Vulkov, co-founder of Enhancv. “AI was meant to streamline recruitment, but without disclosure and clear communication, it has created a black hole that turns qualified candidates away.”

Candidate Counter-Moves and Abandoned Applications

The study shows that friction from automated gates is forcing workers—especially younger and entry-to-mid-level candidates—to walk away from opportunities altogether.

AI screening friction hits roles paying under six figures hardest: 79.1% of all abandoned applications were for positions offering less than $100,000 per year.

Candidates are increasingly turning to AI to even the playing field, with 49.6% using artificial intelligence tools to improve their performance for automated interviews and screening software.

About the Study

This research is based on a survey of 1,066 U.S. job seekers conducted by Enhancv in April 2026. The sample includes entry-level workers, mid-level managers, freelancers, and senior executives across multiple industries. The survey measured silent rejections, AI disclosure rates, candidate drop-off behaviors, and perceptions of bias in automated hiring.
