Penned by fire-safety specialists Ryan Fogelman and Dalan Zartman and brought to life by illustrator Darci Ward, Supercharged! Batty and the Battery Rescue Team makes its official debut on September 29 at RCon® 2026, hosted by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) in St. Louis, Missouri.
This book emerges from a joint initiative created in cooperation with Fire Rover, the Energy Security Agency (ESA), the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA), the National Waste & Recycling Foundation (NWRF), the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA), the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), and the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF). It unites prominent organizations from the recycling, waste management, fire safety, and environmental education fields around one common aim: teaching the younger generation about battery safety.
As per Ryan Fogelman’s 9th Annual Waste & Recycling Facility Fires Report, 2025 marked the most severe year on record since he started monitoring publicly reported incidents in 2016, with 448 waste and recycling facility fires documented across the U.S. and Canada. That figure exceeded the earlier high of 430 incidents in 2024 and was nearly 25% above the yearly average of 360 fires.
Fogelman’s investigations have consistently highlighted the rising influx of lithium-ion batteries entering the waste and recycling streams as a major and escalating contributor to facility fire hazards. Yet the problem reaches far beyond waste and recycling sites.
Lithium-ion batteries are now woven into everyday routines. When harmed, charged incorrectly, or thrown away improperly, they can spark blazes that endanger homes, neighborhoods, workers, waste and recycling plants, and emergency responders.
That mounting threat helped spark Supercharged! around a straightforward concept:
