While automation has existed in ERP for some time, modern AI has opened countless fresh avenues for organizations to tackle complex business challenges. Today, nearly every software vendor promotes an AI strategy, making it a critical factor for firms optimizing their current ERP or planning to deploy a new system. Because AI is altering how ERP systems are set up and used, Shawn Windle urges leaders to evaluate a vendor’s AI roadmap from the outset rather than treating it as an afterthought. “The simplest and most important thing I can say is, don’t wait,” Windle stressed.
For years, many enterprises have depended on heavily customized ERP platforms. Although these systems once fueled growth, they no longer meet today’s operational demands. Throughout his executive career, Windle has guided hundreds of companies through digital transformation. He understands that to remain competitive in a fast-changing market, organizations must evolve. Postponing AI adoption could mean losing ground to rivals already using the technology. It can also send a negative signal when employees continue relying on manual tasks that could be automated with ease.
There are numerous ways to apply AI, but it is essential to coordinate with your ERP vendor to confirm that its AI features support your company’s specific workflows, objectives, and future direction. Piling AI agents or LLMs on top of a legacy system is feasible, but doing so may expose sensitive data to the public. Fortunately, established ERP vendors such as Microsoft, Epicor, and Infor have spent years managing enterprise software. They have constructed the necessary infrastructure and “had the responsibility to keep the models, the safeguards, and the guardrails” in place, allowing them to embed AI capabilities directly into the application. That is why Windle highlighted the need to be in “lockstep with your ERP vendor. And if you’re with an ERP vendor today that isn’t talking about AI, you need to change that.”
With deep knowledge of enterprise software and ERP vendors, Windle has assisted hundreds of organizations in choosing the systems best suited to their distinctive requirements. To conclude the conversation, Windle shared insider best practices for assessing vendors and determining whether a fresh implementation is necessary—those insights are available here.
Windle leaves the audience with an encouraging message: “If you fundamentally understand the software vendor’s history, trajectory, and how they see themselves growing relative to competitors, it’ll be obvious who you should connect with and which applications you can rely on for many years as part of your strategy going forward.”
