APILayer flags AI coding flaw: hardcoded exchange rates silently ship in generated code

When a developer asks an AI assistant to build a currency converter, the resulting code often contains a fixed value—say, 1.08 for euros to dollars—that was pulled from the model’s training data. That number reflects a market snapshot from a past date, yet the code carries no record of when that rate was valid.

The generated code runs, and tests written against the same constant pass. The output looks correct, so the code ships. From that point forward, every price, invoice, and refund processed through that function relies on a single, static rate while the market shifts daily.

AI coding tools can use Exchangeratesapi to replace outdated hardcoded currency values with accurate, up-to-date exchange rates.

Also worth a look: Aviationstack fills the blind spot where AI booking agents stop tracking flights and Currencylayer expands to 170+ currencies, adds live bid-ask spread data for finance teams.

Given access to a rate service and an API key, the same assistant can write the request. What it lacks is the live rate itself—no model holds today’s market data.

Exchangeratesapi fills that gap. The service covers more than 170 world currencies, aggregates data from over 15 exchange rate sources, and provides both real-time rates and historical rates dating back to 1999. Each response includes the timestamp of when rates were collected, allowing code to log the exact day a conversion was performed. This exchange rate API helps developers integrate live and historical currency data into AI-generated applications.

To prevent hardcoded rates from sneaking into generated code, APILayer recommends adding a single rule to the project’s instructions file: never hardcode an exchange rate; fetch it from Exchangeratesapi at runtime, and treat a failed request as an error rather than falling back to a constant.

Exchangeratesapi works alongside the rest of the APILayer suite. IPstack converts a visitor’s IP address into geolocation data, including the local currency code, and Exchangeratesapi then turns that code into a live rate. IPstack also offers a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that AI assistants and agents can call directly, with additional MCP servers across the suite planned.

Developers can try Exchangeratesapi on the free plan at https://exchangeratesapi.io/.

Why it matters: As AI-generated code becomes more prevalent in production, subtle flaws like hardcoded financial data can propagate unnoticed across applications. Developers who rely on AI assistants must actively enforce dynamic data sourcing to avoid costly errors in currency-dependent systems.
