In late June, Ford executives acknowledged that the company’s most experienced engineers left before their knowledge could be integrated into automated systems, compelling the automaker to bring back veterans to retrain both younger staff and Ai tools. The turnaround proved successful. Ford subsequently secured the top position among mainstream brands in the J.D. Power 2026 Initial Quality Study, its first time leading the ranking since 2010.
Ford is not alone. Klarna, which stated in 2024 that Ai was managing the workload of roughly 700 customer service agents, later started rehiring human employees after satisfaction dropped on more complex interactions. Research firm Gartner forecasts that by 2027, half of all organizations that linked headcount reductions to Ai will rehire people for comparable roles. A February 2026 Careerminds survey indicated that two-thirds of companies that executed Ai-driven layoffs have already begun rehiring, and research by Orgvue found that 55 percent of business leaders now view those redundancy choices as errors.
