Ineffable Intelligence, the groundbreaking London-based AI startup founded by AlphaGo pioneer David Silver, has chosen Google Cloud as its exclusive infrastructure partner to build what it calls a “superlearner” — an AI system fundamentally different from today’s large language models. The announcement, made ahead of Google Cloud Summit London 2026, represents one of the most anticipated AI research partnerships of the year.
Ineffable Intelligence emerged from stealth in April 2026 with a record-breaking $1.1 billion seed round — the largest ever raised in Europe — at a valuation of $5.1 billion. The round was led by Sequoia and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Google, NVIDIA, and Index Ventures. The scale of backing from premier investors reflects the high expectations for Silver’s unconventional approach to AI development.
Under the Google Cloud partnership, Ineffable Intelligence will deploy one of the largest clusters of A5X bare-metal instances powered by NVIDIA’s latest Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting that Google Cloud is providing its complete Hypercomputer infrastructure — from Jupiter networking to advanced storage solutions — “enabling its researchers to concentrate on innovations rather than obstacles.”
What makes Ineffable Intelligence’s approach distinctive is its rejection of the large language model paradigm that has dominated AI development for the past several years. Rather than training on vast corpora of human-generated text, Silver’s team is building AI systems that learn through reinforcement learning — the same approach that powered AlphaGo’s superhuman mastery of the game of Go, and later AlphaZero’s domination of chess and shogi.
Silver, who spent more than a decade leading DeepMind’s reinforcement learning research before departing in January 2026, has described Ineffable’s mission as “establishing first contact with superintelligence.” The company aims to develop AI systems capable of independently rediscovering breakthroughs in science, mathematics, and technology — potentially accelerating human progress in fundamental research areas.
The Google Cloud deal provides Ineffable Intelligence with the computational scale necessary to pursue this ambitious research agenda. By accessing NVIDIA’s most advanced GPU architecture through Google’s global infrastructure, the company can run the large-scale reinforcement learning experiments needed to test and validate its approach. If successful, Ineffable’s superlearner paradigm could represent the next major frontier in AI development beyond the current generation of foundation models.
