GitHub is experiencing unprecedented growth driven by the explosive adoption of AI-powered coding agents, with the platform reporting a roughly 3.5x increase in overall load over just two years. This surge, fueled by autonomous development tools working around the clock, has prompted Microsoft to expand GitHub’s infrastructure through a multi-cloud strategy — a pragmatic response to the challenge of scaling to meet extraordinary demand.
The scale of AI agent activity on GitHub is staggering. Claude Code alone now contributes 2.6 million code commits every week, while AI-generated pull requests grew from 4 million per month in September 2025 to 17 million by March 2026 — a more than four-fold increase in just six months. This represents a fundamental shift in how software is being developed globally, with AI agents increasingly handling routine coding tasks that previously required human developers working business hours.
GitHub CTO Vlad Fedorov has publicly acknowledged the extraordinary scale challenge, revealing that the platform’s infrastructure team initially planned for a 10x capacity expansion in October 2025, only to realize by February 2026 that they needed to design for 30x current scale to meet projected growth. The company has declared operational priorities of “availability first, then capacity, then new features” — a clear signal that reliability remains paramount as AI transforms software development.
To address the capacity challenge, Microsoft has embraced a multi-cloud approach, simultaneously accelerating the migration of GitHub to Azure while leveraging additional infrastructure partners. The Azure migration has been progressing well, with 40% of monolith traffic now running on Azure — up from just 8% in February 2026. The company has also introduced usage-based billing on June 1, 2026, and expanded its partner ecosystem to deliver specialized AI development tools, nine new integrations including Monday.com, Miro, and Moody’s having been added to the platform.
